Project Development and Research

Image
After drawing a few initial sketches, I decided to do a research  about cubism in  architecture. It is very important because my project is related to this style and I need to deepen my knowlede and develop my inititial idea. Cubism in architecture has existed for many years and interesting designs are still being created. The Czech Republic turned out to be a very important place for this style, and it is quite specific. They had a great contribution to the development of cubism in the architecture of the twentieth century, and even later created their own style called Rondocubism.                                   The House at the Black Madonna (1911-1912) by Josef Gocar The House at the Black Madonna is one of the first cubism building in Prague. It is located in the historic old town, therefore the form is similar to the neighboring buildings, but it has new cubic ideas in it.

Research of initial ideas

Image
After spending a couple of minutes thinking about my initial ideas, I was trying to gather and collect as many ideas and thoughts as it is possible. My chosen topic is black, and my continuation route is architecture. I started from research from finding examples of the use of black colour in architecture. I found a variety of interesting designs from architects from all over the world. Black is known as a universal colour, and examples of it can be found in past and modern architecture.   From my research I discovered that black colour in the architecture quite often comes with minimalistic designs and simplicity.  I started to thinking about designing a modern hotel with a black exterior. I will name my hotel Black Diamond , however, I still need to find a proper location and design the shape.  References: The 25 Black House Exterior Design if Pure Darkness  Available on:  The 25+ Black House Exterior Design of Pure Darkness (superhitideas.com)  Accessed: 30/07/22 House Exterior Col

Project Sign-off

Image
This is my project sign-oof for this term. My idea is to design hotel, and my theme is black. The name for this building is "Black Diamond", and it will be modern design building with black exterior wall surface and expansive windows. I will design the building and I will create four 2D outcomes and one 3D outcome. I will digitailzed my work and I will add everything to my website. https://docs.google.com/document/d/11RxyXHwpv1UIChEBxo2fQdT8T5dvW9_DhvX_au-uU5U/edit?usp=sharing

Planning Primary Research

Image
I need to do my primary planning research, and also to create questions for my audience. My main project for this term is a Black Diamond- two story hotel, which will be located in the capital of Poland-Warsaw. It will be a place called  Praski Port or Praski Harbor, which is currently under the renovation. The questions I need to ask will help me with targeting my audience. I need to research about history of Praski Harbour and planning criteria for this area, as it is a historic place. I need to develop the shape of my building, including colours and interiors. I need to design a building with the nearest surrounding and think how they will interact with each other. Then I need to research about materials, and here an important factor will be the closeness to the river.  References:  Port Praski Projekt Planu miejscowego available on:  Port Praski: Znamy projekt planu miejscowego - Urbnews.pl  Accessed:

Initial ideas and sketches

Image
I chose black as my topic, because I like this colour in general but also because of how it is used in architecture.

Smart Objective

For this project I will create four 2D outcomes and one 3D outcome of concept design and a diorama/digital design for a hotel. I chose Black as my topic, because I like how colour black is used in architecture. Black is also one of my favorite colours, it is universal colour and it has a mystery to it. This will be a two-story building, with very large windows and black wall surface. The building will be made of concrete, wood and glass. Shape and structure of the building consists of several interconnected parts. The building will be located in the capital of Poland-Warsaw, in the old docks area called Praski Harbour. The area is recently undergoing renovation. It is a place where old historic tenement houses meet modern architecture. I will create all five outcomes by week eight in order to give myself the time to complete and finalize my work and to digitalize them.  I will hand draw the images of my design for 2D outcomes, and I will create diorama/ digital design for my 3D outcom

Francesco Goya artist research

Image
Franceso Goya (1746-1828), was a Spanish artist, painter and printmaker, and he is considered the most important Spanish romantic artist. During our classes we watched a documentary about life and art of Francesco Goya called "Crazy Like a Genius", written and presented by art commentator Robert Hughes. The author presented many important matters in the artist's life, everything that influenced him.  There is huge diversity in his art, and author describe him as a theatrical artist. Goya painted the world as he sees it, without beautifying it. His works reflect the brutal reality of the world in which he lived. People call him "war reporter", as he showing the dark side of the world. He was reporter and moralist of his times.  One of the works featured in the document is "A Pilgame to San Isidro", and it made  great impression on me. It is a deeply negative image. This painting is one of the Black Paintigs collection, which he created between years181

Ink Pen Perspective Drawings

Image
This was our first perspective drawing and we learned about different perspective methods. We learned and drew diagrams of one, two and three points perspective. We learned the rules of each techniques and what is it vanishing point, horizontal line and parallel lines.  After this we went out to draw some sketches of  landscapes outside our building. I drew the Vijay Patel building from two different points of view. I find this challenging, especially because this building has difficulty drawing curve shapes and strange perspectives, especially from this point of view. I drew a few more sketches of nearby views, like University Surgery. I used pencils (F, H,HB,), Fine Line Drawing Pens ( 0.3, 0.5, 0.8 mm) and for one drawing I added colour brush pens. Additionally, in my self study time after classes I drew a whole silhouette of Vijay Pattel Building from birds eye view for better understanding the design of the building. I used for this Google Earth image.

Workshop Exercise: Box

Image
This is our first workshop task called Box. After a quick brainstorm I decided to design a building which will be inscribed in squares. I drew my first idea of creating a building that consists of many squares. Then I made a small cardboard box to "see" more clearly how to design and shape the building. Then I drew another sketch with more details of how this building will look like. On the basis of this drawing, I designed the building exactly and made it using sketchbook paper, paper tape and glue. Thanks to research and the development of my initial idea, I got an interesting shape that I would not have been able to create before.

Life Drawing One

Image
These are my sketches from the first life drawing workshops in this term. This time I used a variety of medium. For the warm up sketches I used pencils (2B, 3B and 5B). These warm up sketches were one minute drawings and 30 seconds drawings, so we had to build up the body using shapes and geometric figures only, and do it very fast.  Next task was continuous line drawings, for what I used pencils as well.  We did also opposite hand drawing, which was quite a funny experience, because as a left-handed person, it was difficult to draw a line in the same way as when I was drawing using my left hand. After that we did two 20 minutes sketches, where we had more time to add many details.  For the first one, I changed my medium and I used a charcoal. This allowed me to use other techniques, such as smudging or rubbing. In this way I build the figure by creating lights and shadows and then adding details. My last drawing I made using colour pastes, what I find most challenging, as I don't

Fantastic Five

In this post I will present my five initial ideas for this term main project. After brainstorm I decided to choose Black as my topic. I will make some kind of a structure, building. I like black as my theme, as this is an amazing colour, and it might have many meanings.  Colour black is universal, and one of my first thoughts was to design a skyscraper with black glasses windows. Thous panels will be light reflecting, so from seeing it from far away it will be black, but when seeing from close, it will reflect other buildings, sky, clouds, and then the building will be colourfull. Other though was the space, cosmos, a great non-endless black space. I did research about black in architecture to find some inspiration and I discovered many interesting designs.  Space Hotel is another idea of a building that will look like a space station module, joined together one with another.  Another idea is to design a family house based on a black colour facade. As I mention I discovered many inter

Alberto Giacometti artist research

Image
Alberto Giacometti was a sculptor, painter, draftsman and printmaker from Switzerland (1901-1966). He came from an artistic family and was interested in art from an early age. He is considered one of most important sculptors of the 20th century. In the early period of his creativity, he mainly made small-size sculptures. However, his most famous works come from a later period in his life, and they have a completely different form. They are extremely tall and slender figures.6                                              Alberto Giacometti  "Standing Woman" 1958-9 Very interesting are portraits of his wife Annete, which he made eight, between 1962-1965. You can see his own style, where the character is presented in an expressive, dynamic way. The surface of the sculpture is rough and raw, but you can see details, especially of the face itself. He was looking for a more extensive analysis of the human body.                                     Alberto Giacometti - "Bust of

Self-portrait artist research

Image
Johanna Schwaiger is an Austrian artist who specialized in sculpting. She finished Technical School for Professional Crafts and Arts of the Sculpture Department in Hallein. She learned how to carving in wood, stone and clay. She also studied Art History in Paris. To develop her skills even more, she went to Florence to study classical sculpture at Florence Academy of Art. In 2013 she was selected as one of forty artists to create the biggest Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in Mumbai in India.  She is creating very realistic and beautiful sculptures full of emotions. She perfectly captures the movement of the character. You can see that she knows the human anatomy very well and knows how to carve clothes or hair, which for me has always been challenging and difficult to achieve.                                    Johanna Schwaiger " Memories " Clay, life-size, 2012

Self-portrait Sculpture

Image
Our first task in this term was to make a self-portrait, but in 3D technique. I choose to make a Clay Bust as I like working in clay. I have never done a portrait of myself in 3D, although I have drawn myself many times. I use a small plastic bottle as a base to which I attached a ball of paper and tape. Then I covered it all with clay to get the general shape of the head. I used photos but also mirror so that I could observe my head from different sides and angles. Gradually I started to add more layers of clay until I got a satisfactory result.  I use my hands and fingers for shaping the surface, but also modelling tools, like clay blades, rollers and cutting knife. I left the surface quite rough, which was the intended idea.

Welcome post term 3

Image
Welcome back in our third and last term in this year. I spend the break between the terms resting and I visited Wales and Liverpool. I had a plan to go to the top of the highest mountain in Wales, Snowdon, but the weather spoiled my plans. Still, the views were great and I want to visit this place again. Also visited Liverpool for the first time and visited the Museum of Liverpool, where I found many interesting exhibits. Of course, I was most interested in Dioramas of old Liverpool, the docks and other. On the second floor I found a room in which a historic tenement house from previous era was build with the room and courtyard and  all details. It turned out that people lived then in very narrow buildings and they were really very close to each other. This made it very dark there, even during the day. History of the docks museum
