Self-portrait artist research

Johanna Schwaiger is an Austrian artist who specialized in sculpting. She finished Technical School for Professional Crafts and Arts of the Sculpture Department in Hallein. She learned how to carving in wood, stone and clay. She also studied Art History in Paris. To develop her skills even more, she went to Florence to study classical sculpture at Florence Academy of Art. In 2013 she was selected as one of forty artists to create the biggest Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in Mumbai in India.

She is creating very realistic and beautiful sculptures full of emotions. She perfectly captures the movement of the character. You can see that she knows the human anatomy very well and knows how to carve clothes or hair, which for me has always been challenging and difficult to achieve.

  1. What about the techniques she uses in her work - how does that relate to the work you made?
